yesterday, my girl and i were supposed to watch our just-purchased DVD’s of Beat Takeshi’s Brother, and Dolls. the Dolls dvd would not cooperate with the player, so i volunteered my still unwatched vcd of David Lynch‘s The Elephant Man ( i wanted quiet before Takeshi’s trademark deadpan ultra-violence).
my verdict? i dont like the film entirely, but the merits are there: the apt trademark Lynchian dreamy scenes, non-soapy sentimantality, and no these-are-all-the-facts-we-can-condense for a true-story, feature-length. however, thinking multiple times over it, i don’t believe there’s any other compelling way to tell the story than what Lynch did: straightforward.
sadly, we weren’t able to see any Takeshi movies.
