In Other Worlds: Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC
Last week, I was still using Windows XP on my home computer. The urge to upgrade to Vista was non-existent, but during a support call at work when I had to do basic blind-support (no remote access) troubleshooting for one of the bosses of the company on a Vista machine, I decided to bypass my biases, and just proceed with an upgrade. This was timely, as I just got myself a new videocard, and a much-delayed DVD writer purchase was already done a month or two ago.
I have Vista on my machine now, with the latest updates. Great improvement from XP? Yes, I should say so. Does it deserve the negative criticism it has been getting since its release? After a few days with it, I really don’t see anything major to gripe about.
Then, Microsoft released a release candidate for Windows 7 to the public last Tuesday, valid until June 1, 2010.
And, here I am, a few hours after downloading the DVD-sized evaluation-copy operating system, and I’m loving how Windows 7 RC works. Very snappy, just like the recently released Ubuntu Linux 9.04.
HA!
On Vista Aero with my current specs, I’m around 60+ RAM usage. On Windows 7 RC Aero, I’m using less than 40-50. My rig runs on a first-gen dual core Pentium and 1.5GB of RAM.
Sarsi With Egg
I had two official drinks when I started school: root beer and sarsi. I didn’t know any other kid who liked what I liked, and I guess that was the start of my being the oddball that i am now.
Back then, there was this weird concoction you can do with sarsi: add one raw egg. I remember sipping it the classic pinoy way: with a straw, and contained in a plastic bag, the type used to sell ice.
So I posed a question over Plurk about it, and no, I found out it wasn’t something that was just done in the 80s. Read more here.
So, being the naturally brave soul I am, I present you with my refreshing post-breakfast drink:
It was good. Like root beer float.
Podcast Kayo Dyan! Two New Episodes From The Pakbet Crew
I was supposed to be on podcast leave last weekend, but the rest of my group did NOT record ANY podcast episode as scheduled. So, on a hot Sunday afternoon, we somehow got together, and was even able to invite guests, to record the 4th installment to the MEGA-Pakbet Podcast show, which is due for a change-of-title, because references to the show don’t mention “MEGA” anyway, and we have to somehow get the word Plurk in the title.
Mega-Pakbet Podcast – Episode 4: The Jenijenjen Song
TOPICS:The Banchetto Plurkfiesta, a Bebigerls update; the Failon Incident, and its coverage on old and new media; and The Cat Killer from UP.
Stream or download the podcast here.
Pakbet Interviews Clinton Palanca on Photography
I would also like to present another episode from Pakbet Interviews, this time with a topic close to heart: photography. This episode is actually an excerpt from a longer recording, which didn’t really go anywhere. Karen and I chatted with Clinton Palanca in the last third of the show about film photography, cameras, and related photographic geekery. The Clinton Palanca? Sometime magazine editor who also wrote fiction and non-fiction some time ago? Yes. He’s a Plurker.

On Plurk Socials
And pre-work Friday, I was munching on much-missed beach house pork barbecue over at UP Diliman. I didn’t expect the meat to shrink from what I’ve been used to, but yes, it did. I shared lunch with two lovely ladies from Plurkdom, Nikai and Joiz.
We were there to get UP hoodies, and I ended my visit there stuffing ourselves with cake, and leaving the girls to fend for themselves.
